Leda M. Whitmer, DDS
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
“A dentist”, I replied.
“Oh, you mean dental hygienist.”
“No. A dentist.”
It was the 1960s. The comment went right over my head. I just assumed my homeroom teacher didn’t hear me right. I surged forward in my academic career, oblivious to any obstacles.
I’m a quadruple Bruin. An inveterate student devoted to excellence. And it makes me mad when patients come my way who have received expensive and unnecessary treatment. You see, I am the family dentist. I see the kids of the kids I used to tend to. I’m there for the births, soccer games, graduations, weddings and funerals.
I can’t think of any other profession that provides that kind of long-term continuity. Over the decades, I’ve learned what kind of conservative dentistry is best for the long run.
And you have to treat family right.
My office is not a one stop shop with specialists that show up just once a month. I have personally screened a core group of the best specialists in town to work with closely.
I was admitted to the UCLA School of Engineering as the only woman in my freshman class. I got my Bachelor’s degree cum laude in Mathematics and was accepted to Phi Beta Kappa, the National Honor Society.
UCLA School of Dentistry appointed me as a Regents Scholar. It’s the highest award granted by the University of California and a free ride to Dental School.
And now, I’ve completed another two and a half years to get my certificate in the Advanced Clinical Training Program from the UCLA School of Dentistry, Department of Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine. I got 90%, the highest score of my classmates in the written examination for the American Board of Orofacial Pain, a test fewer than one thousand dentists in the world have passed.
My instructors were so impressed, they urged me to apply for a lecturer position at UCLA alongside the most noteworthy experts in this rarefied field. And recently, I became certified in Dental Acupuncture, trained by physicians from the East-West Center at UCLA. There are just a handful of us in the country.
So now I bring my wisdom and experience to the Santa Clarita Valley as the only Board-Certified Orofacial Pain specialist in town with my level of qualifications. I figure out the most effective treatment for chronic pain that others have been unable to solve, even after root canal treatment or extraction. I also handle the tough TMJ cases as well as Dental Sleep Medicine treatments for obstructive sleep apnea.
The difference is that I have worked under the direct supervision of world renowned authorities in the UCLA Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine Clinic, treating patients, not just submitting assignments to some online class.
No matter what your needs are, a simple checkup, or stabbing pain that has persisted over the years, I am committed to finding a solution.
