Registered Dental Hygienist
As far back as I can remember, I would visit the dentist very often with my parents. Coming from Europe and not knowing much about dental care, they needed a major about of dental work done. At the age of 16, I began working as a circulating dental assistant at my parent’s dentist. The hygienist at that office was from Hawaii and went to school there. She became my mentor, as did the doctor. They were so caring of their patients and made them feel very comfortable. The doctor was instrumental in my decision to become a dental hygienist. When I was accepted to the LACC/UCLA program, he was so excited and could hardly wait for me to graduate and work with him. Unfortunately, he passed away just two months before I graduated and I never had the pleasure of working with him.
My husband, Gary, of 38 years was actually my very first patient. It took me 3 hours to clean his teeth and he still married me. We have 2 beautiful daughters – Stephanie and Heather. As most of you know, Stephanie and Jeremy gave us 2 amazing grandsons – Jacob and Benjamin. They are the loves or our lives. In my spare time, I enjoy playing tennis, golf and going to the beach. And of course spending time with my boys.
After 39 years of practicing as a dental hygienist, I am still very enthusiastic and committed to my profession. The program at UCLA introduced me to many different facets of dentistry. From working Mobile Clinics on the weekends in underprivileged communities to staying on an Indian reservation in Arizona, I truly knew I wanted to help people achieve good dental health. I have been working with Dr. Whitmer for the past 11 years on Wednesdays. I also work in an office in Tarzana 3 days a week for the past 18 years. My goal as a hygienist is to educate my patients to achieve optimal dental health. The gap between medical and dental fields are narrowing and research is showing a strong connection between periodontal disease and systemic conditions. It is becoming more apparent of the importance of maintaining a healthy mouth.
Hope to see you soon at your next dental cleaning appointment. Keep your hygienist happy- BRUSH AND FLOSS EVERYDAY!!

My name is Michelle Hoyler Gomez I am the office manager for Dr. Leda Whitmer. I graduated dental assisting school in 1999 from Bryman College. I have been working in the dental field for 16 years. When my children were just toddlers, I decided I needed to go to school to be able to help provide for the family.
